Liz Truss’ plan to drill for more oil and gas in the North Sea is “not the answer” to the cost of living crisis, Labor has warned. The foreign secretary and favorite to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister is said to be ready to approve a raft of drilling licenses if she enters No 10 Downing Street next week. Anneliese Dodds, the leader of the Labor Party, said the proposals would do nothing to help rising bills in the immediate future, as she warned that raising the price cap would “plunge many, many households into financial hardship”. Earlier, a Conservative minister described his party’s long leadership contest as “deeply regrettable” during the cost of living crisis. Matt Warman said the months-long drive to find a new prime minister had been “disruptive” and said the consequences had been forewarned even before Boris Johnson was ousted. Liz Truss was last night accused of “running scared” after pulling out of an in-depth interview with the BBC – due to take place on Tuesday night – at the last minute.

Birmingham to provide ‘warm banks’
Birmingham has become the latest council to announce measures to provide or promote so-called ‘warm banks’ – pledging to “map places across the city where people can go to keep warm”, says Adam Forrest, the politician our correspondent. Councilor John Cotton, a cabinet member for the Labour-run local authority, said: “Whether it’s local community centres, places of worship or libraries, we want to help people find places to welcome them, for free.” He added: “It shouldn’t be the case that people can’t afford to keep their homes warm, but that’s the reality we face here in Birmingham.” Matt Mathers30 August 2022 12:08 1661856291
Greenpeace – Truss oil and gas plan will have ‘no impact on bills’
Greenpeace has warned that new oil and gas drilling could take 25 years to pump and have “no real impact on energy bills” while exacerbating climate change. The Tory leadership frontrunner has pledged to grant new licenses if she wins the contest to replace Boris Johnson as prime minister. Greenpeace UK Chief Scientist Dr Doug Parr said: “Unleashing a drilling frenzy in the North Sea is not a plan to help bill payers, but a gift to the fossil fuel giants who are already making billions from this crisis. “New oil and gas will take a quarter of a century to pump, will eventually be sold at world prices and have no real impact on energy bills, but will still fuel the climate crisis. “Our dependence on natural gas is what got us into this mess, and doubling it won’t get us out of it. New renewables are nine times cheaper than natural gas. Overcharging renewables and repairing our energy-wasting homes by investing in insulation is the fastest way to reduce our dependence on natural gas and get our energy bills under control.” “If Liz Truss really wants to help cash-strapped households, she should bring in a freeze on energy bills along with additional financial support for the poorest households, partly funded by properly taxing the astronomical profits of oil and natural gas companies gas”. ICYMI: Truss won’t finalize cost of living plan until she gets ‘full support and advice’ as PM
Liz Truss’s camp says it will not finalize its plans for critical cost-of-living support before receiving the “full support and advice” available only to the government of the day. The public will likely have to wait to find out what help they will get with their skyrocketing energy bills until Ms Truss is expected to replace Boris Johnson in Downing Street next week. But in the short term, ironically, it can reduce spending and slow down much-needed progress, because councils can sit on their hands while they rework their projects.” Henri Murison, the director of lobby group Northern Powerhouse Partnership, said: “The problem is the government doesn’t give you the cost to build something, it’s a fixed funding deal and a lot of councils will be stuck either you have to give all the money back or make up the difference yourself’. The Tory leadership frontrunner has been accused by Labor of causing families “unnecessary worry” with her “decisiveness” about possible measures to tackle the cost of living crisis. Her campaign, which is under increasing pressure to spell out how it would help households this winter, said meetings offered with government officials to prepare for a possible transition did not cover all the information needed for Ms. Tras. A campaign source said: “Liz and her team are working to ensure they are able to hit the ground running if elected Prime Minister. “Access meetings have been offered with the Cabinet Secretary to provide limited briefings to help prepare for the formation of an administration. “But tackling the cost of living crisis will rightly require the full support and advice available only to the government of the day.” (REUTERS) Holly Bancroft30 August 2022 09:38 1661848210
Rate rise could be abandoned as inflation soars, ministers have warned
The government’s flattening agenda could be abandoned when Boris Johnson leaves office amid rising inflation, experts have warned. Neil O’Brien, a former Leveling up minister and Mr Johnson’s adviser on the issue, has said inflation “will make many projects less viable”. He told the Times: “Construction costs are even higher than general price inflation. “Many councils will consider clarifying projects or rejecting items. But in the short term, ironically, it can reduce spending and slow down much-needed progress, because councils can sit on their hands while they rework their projects.” Henri Murison, the director of lobby group Northern Powerhouse Partnership, said: “The problem is the government doesn’t give you the cost to build something, it’s a fixed funding deal and a lot of councils will be stuck either you have to give all the money back or make up the difference yourself’. title: “Cost Of Living Latest Liz Truss Says Her Natural Gas Plan Is Not The Answer To Energy Bill Crisis Klmat” ShowToc: true date: “2022-12-06” author: “Isabel Marcum”

Union leaders have backed concerted action on pay as the UK’s cost of living crisis escalates. DCMS Minister Matt Warman lost his internet connection this morning…while being interviewed about the government’s broadband rollout in southern England. You’re the broadband minister and you can’t hear me.” See more of the exchange below: Matt Mathers August 30, 2022 10:30 am 1661850838
Truss oil and gas drilling plan ‘not the answer’
Dodds also criticized Truss’ reported plan to approve more oil and gas drilling licenses in the North Sea. The plan, Dodds said, was “not the answer” to reducing rising energy bills now, as she warned that raising the price cap would “plunge many, many households into financial hardship”, she told Times Radio. “Finance of Imagination”
Anneliese Dodds, the leader of the Labor Party, was out of the opposition broadcast circle. He blamed Tory leadership rivals Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak for their plans to ease the cost of living crisis. Ms Dodds said her party would only draw up plans that were “fully costed”. “I’m afraid at the moment we’re just getting fantastic economics from the Conservatives,” he told Times Radio.
