Singer Mariah Carey, Marlo Hampton of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Atlanta United player Brad Guzan and Calvin Ridley of the Atlanta Falcons all had their homes burglarized, the indictment says. The 220-count indictment was filed Aug. 22 and charges 26 people, most of whom are accused of violating Georgia’s anti-gang and extortion laws.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said the crimes charged in the indictment — carjacking, kidnapping, armed robbery, shootings, home invasions — were committed by members of the Drug Rich gang, which she said began in 2016 in a neighborhood county. In addition to celebrity targets, social media influencers also fall victim to home invasions and burglaries, Willis said.
“What they’re doing is targeting people who show off their wealth on social media,” he said. “So I have a message for the public: Where it’s fun to put your stuff on social media and show off, unfortunately these gangs are getting smarter, more sophisticated in the way they target you.”
But Willis also had a message for alleged gang members: “If you thought Fulton was a good county to bring your crime, bring your violence, you’re wrong and you’re going to suffer consequences and today is the beginning of some of those the consequences”.
Willis said the indictment, filed last week, represented a collaboration between different law enforcement agencies working together. Cracking down on gangs is a priority for Willis, and she said she plans to seek tough penalties for people involved in violent gang activity.
“I’m not going to negotiate with gang members. I am not going to allow pleas,” he said. “We will find you, convict you and send you to prison for the rest of your days and I make no apologies for that.”
