The blaze at Baggy Point near Croyde could be seen from miles around as smoke billowed from the sea. In the early hours of Tuesday morning (August 30), a spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “We haven’t looked into the cause yet, it’s still ongoing. So it started around 5.30pm yesterday evening. The Fire at Baggy Point Credit: William Giddy “20 acres of gorge has been affected by the fire and we’ve had two appliances out there overnight. They’ll be relieved this morning so we’ve been there ever since.” The National Trust, which owns and manages the cape, said: “We are aware that there is a fire at Buggy Point. The fire service is on the scene to deal with this so we are asking people to stay away. “Thank you for your understanding. We will share news when we know more.” North Devon MP Selaine Saxby shared a photo of the billowing smoke online and said: “Very sad to see smoke coming from the Baggy Point fire now. Thank you to our brave fire service for attending. “Please be careful with cigarettes, barbecues and open fires as the scrub is still very dry.” The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. It comes as the whole of south-west England has been moved into a state of drought.
