Low stock at a West Kelowna liquor store on Saturday. The BC General Employees Union has announced the end of job action targeting liquor and cannabis distribution warehouses. In an email to members Tuesday morning, the union said it has made “real progress” at the bargaining table and hopes to finalize a tentative agreement this coming week. “Our committee is proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we look forward to sharing details with you in an upcoming bulletin that will outline the agreement and the ratification process,” the email said to members. With forward progress made in negotiations, the strike action is being stood down as a “good faith gesture” as the agreement is finalized. “The overtime ban is ended effective immediately, and we will work with picket captains at struck worksites to determine the timing of returning to work,” the union continued. The union says a media blackout will continue in conjunction with the employer until it is time to announce the tentative agreement. The BCGEU’s targeted strike resulted in the stoppage of alcohol shipments to liquor stores and bars and restaurants as well as cannabis to legal storefronts. Cannabis shops started closing and reducing hours last week due to shortages while liquor stores started running out of certain items. It is not yet clear when alcohol and cannabis shipments will resume. The BCGEU represents 33,000 employees of the BC Public Service ranging from social workers and forest fire fighters to jail guards, liquor store workers, clerical staff and ministry employees.
