Each week, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Fashion Cut cover star, releases new episodes of her new podcast, Archetypes, sitting down with women to discuss a word that has been used to demean women and their achievements. This week, Meghan called on Mariah Carey to unpack the word ‘diva’. The most revealing points of the discussion focused on their experiences as “light” biracial women and how things changed when they reached a certain level of fame. Reflecting on when she first identified with Carey as a biracial woman, Meghan said: “I had read this article about Halle Berry and they were asking her how she felt about being treated as a mixed race woman in the world. And her response was to say, “Well, your experience of the world is how people see you.” So she said because she was a darker color, she was treated as a black woman, not a mixed woman.” The podcast host added that for years she felt like she existed in an “in-between” zone. “They don’t treat you as a black woman. They don’t treat you as a white woman,” she explained, adding that she felt the perception of her ethnicity change when she started dating her husband, Prince Harry. “That’s when I started to understand what it was like to be treated as a black woman. Because until then I was treated as a mixed woman. And things really changed,” he said. “That’s an interesting thing — a mixed woman,” replied Carey. “Because I always thought it should be okay to say, ‘I’m mixed.’ It should be okay to say that, but people want you to choose.” They also discuss growing up mixed and the struggles of not fitting in or identifying with a certain race. “For us it’s so different because we’re light-skinned,” says Meghan. “You’re not treated as a black woman, you’re not treated as a white woman. You kind of fit in between.” pic.twitter.com/wf3Wts47a6 — Omid Scobie (@scobie) August 30, 2022 The two eventually returned to the diva tag debate, which ended up putting Meghan in a difficult spot. “You give us diva moments sometimes, Megan,” Carey said. Megan looked a bit confused, “What kind of diva moments am I giving you?” Later in her outro, Meghan admitted she “started to sweat a little bit” until she realized Carey meant it as a compliment. “When he said ‘diva’, he was talking about the way I dress, my posture, the clothes, the fairytale as he sees it. He meant the diva as a compliment. But I heard it as digging.’ Does Mariah Carey call you a diva? Sounds like heaven to me.
