In an update Tuesday, Ontario Provincial Police said a total of 191 charges were laid in Wasaga Beach and on major arteries leading into the city between Friday and Sunday.
Authorities said 154 of the charges fell under the Highway Traffic Act, including 37 for speed-related offences, 18 for improper or no muffler and six for making unnecessary noise.
Three drivers were also charged with impaired driving.
The latest figures come a day after police revealed they were investigating a series of offenses that took place early Sunday morning in Wasaga Beach, including the smashing of windows in two occupied police cruisers.
Police also said they were investigating property damage at two large stores.
“This past weekend, the safety of our community was repeatedly put at risk and that is not acceptable,” Mayor Nina Bifolchi said in a statement issued Monday. “A group of people participating in an unsanctioned car rally visited our community and broke the law. This included careless and dangerous driving, operating unsafe vehicles, destroying public and private property, trespassing on businesses, disturbing the peace and endangering people’s lives.”
Bifolchi said in her statement that city officials met with the OPP ahead of this weekend’s unsanctioned H20i car rally and told them an “operational plan” was in place to keep the community safe.
But he said “police resources last weekend did not allow for the robust response required to maintain law and order”.
He is calling on the OPP to “review what happened and take steps to ensure that what we saw never happens again.”
“There were many examples brought to the attention of the city where laws were being broken and no police intervention was observed. This is unacceptable to the residents of Wasaga Beach,” he said.
The OPP said they continue to conduct “thorough and exhaustive investigations” into the offenses found this weekend.
They are urging residents to immediately report any property damage or crime from this weekend.
