Gazprom’s statement added that Russian law prohibits the country’s natural gas suppliers from supplying further deliveries of natural gas to foreign buyers if payment has not been made in full by the buyer within the contractual period.
Gazprom added that it has notified Engie of the complete suspension of gas deliveries from September 1 until full payment for the supplied gas is received.
The announcement came hours after Gazprom announced it would cut gas supplies to France.
The supply reduction is due to “a dispute between the parties on the implementation of the contracts,” Engie said in a statement earlier on Tuesday.
“This reduction is the logical continuation of the actions of Gazprom for several months, which does not respect its contracts and reduces its supplies to most of its customers,” a source from the cabinet of the French energy ministry told CNN, adding that the Gazprom’s actions did not jeopardize France’s security of supply.
Engie also said a Gazprom reduction would not affect supply.
The company had “already secured the necessary volumes to ensure the supply of its customers and its own needs” and has implemented a number of “measures to significantly reduce the immediate financial and physical impact that could arise from the interruption of deliveries natural gas from Gazprom,” he said.
Engie did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment on the full suspension.
