It wasn’t particularly the pictures that we were afraid of because they were going to take pictures everywhere you went, but it was the amount of paparazzi and the measures they were ready to take. [take] and follow us, chase us… and get as close as they can.” Lee Sansum said Diana tried to negotiate with the rogue paparazzi. (Courtesy of Lee Sansum) “It was just crazy,” he continued. “There were hundreds of them around us. We could see boats everywhere. There was even a helicopter to try and shoot… The princess was used to all this, but we weren’t. Mohammed Al Fayed was a very high-profile man in the UK, so we were used to having the press around us, but they took it to the next level. When we were on the jet ski, they were also in the sea… It was dangerous at times. There were times when I had to say, ‘You can’t go out today”… We did everything we could to make sure everyone had a great holiday.” According to Sansum, Diana told him there was nothing he could do about the relentless paparazzi in the UK. However, she was thinking about her future and the possibility of moving to the United States where she could “get away from it all.” PRINCE CHARLES MARRIAGE TO PRINCESS DIANA ‘WILL ALWAYS MAKE HIM’, AUTHOR SAYS: ‘REMEMBERED FOR ONE THING’ Diana, Princess of Wales and son Prince William are seen holidaying with Dodi Al Fayed (not pictured) in St Tropez in the summer of 1997, shortly before Diana and Dodi were killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31 1997. Not necessarily to stay with him, but in the same area. Before the trip, we understood that there would be work out there as well. I put my name down to go to I have a lot of family in the states. I thought that it would have been a great opportunity for me to go there, but obviously, that didn’t happen.” After her messy divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana was looking forward to a fresh start in her life. (VINCENT AMALVY/AFP via Getty Images) “He talked to me about moving to the states,” she shared. “She said the press hated her in the UK. She didn’t know why, but in the states, people loved her there, the press loved her there. She felt safe there. She felt welcome there. And that’s where she had Then I asked her, ‘What what about boys Will you be able to take them with you?” He said, “No, they’ll never let me do that. I’ll just have to see them during school, school holidays, vacations, things like that.” Media scrutiny only worsened during Diana’s escape. Sansum said she worked with the security team to arrange a time when paparazzi could take pictures for a certain amount of time in hopes they would disappear for the day. At first, the plan worked. But in the end, Sansum said, “there was just too much going on.” She also described how the British press would criticize Diana, insisting she was just seeking attention and sympathy after her divorce from Charles. Dodi Al Fayed had a house in California. At the time of her death, Princess Diana was considering moving to the United States to escape the British tabloids. PRINCESS DIANA’S BROTHER, EARL SPENCER, SAYS MARTIN BASHIR ‘BEAUTIFUL’ HIM TO SECURE ‘GIVEAWAY’ INTERVIEW “I think the headline was something like ‘Prince Charles left this for this,’” Sansum said. “And next to Camilla was this beautiful picture of Princess Diana. At that time, no one was safe from the paparazzi… I remember one of the lads, who was working, said to her, “What do you think about that?” He simply said, “Well, it’s his choice.” And then he moved on. I thought it took a lot of confidence not to bother her.” After the trip, Sansum said he received a thoughtful note from Diana personally thanking him for helping keep her and her sons safe during their vacation. (Photo by Michel Dufour/WireImage) According to Sansum, he was not assigned to look after Al Fayed when he went to Paris with Diana. Instead, his friend Trevor Rees-Jones, who was part of the security in Saint-Tropez, took the job. He was seriously injured in the traffic accident that killed the couple, as well as the driver Henri Paul. At that time the vehicle was speeding as the paparazzi chased it. “The debate of the time [before the accident] was, ‘We have to step this up,’” Sansum said. “The boys were saying, ‘We’ve got to send more kids’. But the trip had to be low-key.” PRINCESS DIANA DID WHAM! “CANCEL” STAR: “HE DID NOT WANT TO EXPLOIT HER” Sansum said he, along with the rest of the world, was shocked to hear about the fatal crash. He doesn’t believe the numerous conspiracy theories that have emerged over the years, but wonders what could have been done differently to prevent such a tragic accident.
