More than 20,000 people gathered in Bunol, Spain to throw 130 tonnes of rotten tomatoes at each other on Wednesday.
The “La Tomatina” festival is a 75-year-old tradition for the city, but they were forced to stop the practice for the past two years due to COVID-19. Photos show attendees covered head to toe in tomato paste, with many of them having the foresight to wear glasses.
Truckloads of rotten and otherwise unwanted fruit began arriving at noon, and attendees threw them at each other for more than an hour, according to Reuters.
The origins of the festival are murky, but tradition says that a similar battle spontaneously broke out among the residents in 1945.
