About 13,000 additional mammogram images taken in the province in recent years will need to be re-read after it was found that the images were not read according to technical standards. Central Health last week revealed that around 3,000 images will have to be re-read after it was found that the images were read at viewing stations using 3 megapixels instead of the standard 5 megapixels which provide greater detail. This has prompted other health authorities to carry out inspections of their viewing stations to determine whether any images may need to be read again. Eastern, Western and Labrador-Grenfell Health have provided an update on their preliminary assessments and have determined that approximately 13,000 images will need to be re-read. Eastern Health and Labrador-Grenfell Health — whose mammogram images are read by Eastern Health — have identified about 3,000 images each dating back three years. Western Health has identified more than 7,500 images dating back to 2013 that require further examination. There is no immediate update on whether any changes have been detected. To date, discrepancies have been identified in four images in the Central Health area. Affected patients are being contacted. A toll-free phone number has been set up at the Customer Relations office to address any questions or concerns. Anyone with concerns can call 1-833-960-4574 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
