Parents and carers in many local authority areas have been notified of the closure of schools and early years centers on 6, 7 and 8 September. Due to strikes by cleaners, janitors, student support, clerical, technical and catering workers, schools will be closed “in the interest of providing a safe environment for pupils and staff”. It comes amid the first wave of strike action by cleaning workers which has seen rubbish pile up and bins overflow in more than 20 councils which is due to end on Wednesday. A total of 12 councils are expected to be hit by education and early years strikes next week, with many announcing that all nurseries, primary and extra support learning schools will close for three days. Meanwhile, teachers in the EIS – Scotland’s biggest teaching union – will also be asked if they support strike action. It comes after unions rejected the latest pay offer which would have seen a minimum rise of £1,925 for the lowest paid staff, as they demanded the funds be distributed as a lump sum instead of a 5% rise.
