BOSTON – Boston Councilman Carlos Arroyo continues to fend off attacks on his run for Suffolk County district attorney, and he’s doing so with a dwindling steady stream of endorsements. On a day when Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Ed Markey and Rep. Ayanna Pressley all withdrew their endorsements, Arroyo debated Interim Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden at Morning Star Baptist Church in Mattapan in the evening of Wednesday. “I feel resilient. I think part of the issue here is that voters understand that this decision was always going to come down to them,” Arroyo said after the debate. Arroyo is pinning his campaign’s success on two things: those voters and the possible release of police files on sexual assault charges against him in 2005 and 2007. “I hope I have a dossier to give them so we can go forward with indisputable facts and not my word or anyone else’s,” he said. The hearing is scheduled for 14:00 on Thursday. Arroyo said he hopes the files will be released and promised to share them with the public. Hayden, who declined to speak afterward, lashed out during the debate, which was moderated by WBZ-TV’s John Keller. “There’s no way he didn’t know about these allegations. It’s just beyond dispute at this point,” Hayden said. Despite the nearly eight minutes spent on the allegations to begin the debate, Arroyo won over the Mattapan audience at times, promising to abolish minimum sentences and calling for more transparency in policing. For his part, Hayden leaned on his experience and said it will be up to voters to decide whether Arroyo’s past should be a factor in their decisions. Those decisions will be made on qualifying day, September 6. CBSBoston.com Staff The CBS Boston team is a group of experienced journalists who bring you the content on CBSBoston.com.
