The ship has so far cost around £1.2bn to build, £200m over its budget. So far, no buyer has been found for the massive ship – and it is now set to be broken up. The engines and components are now to be sold off, according to German cruising magazine An Bord, while the lower hull will be sold for scrap. Its sister ship, Global Dream’s first ship, is also on the market, but it is not going to be retired. Both vessels are currently in storage at a German shipyard, but time is running out to find a buyer for the pair. MV Werften manager Christoph Morgen told a news conference that the company’s shipyard in Wismar has been sold to Thyssenkrupp’s naval unit, which will use it to build military vessels. This means that both Global Dream and Global Dream II will have to be removed by the end of 2023. He told German newspaper Die Welt that while it is structurally complete, the equipment and passenger facilities still need to be completed. One obstacle to finding a buyer for the ships is that they were designed for the Asian market, according to An Bord, so the “cabin, deck and propulsion system” reportedly needed significant changes before the ships would be suitable for use in North America or Europe. There is some hope of finding a buyer with cruise ship specialists TradeWinds saying Stena wants to buy the ship in the hope it will boost its Chinese cruises. TradeWinds said: “Global Dream would have no problem finding a buyer in a strong cruise market. “Faced with a tight deadline to remove the Global Dream from its shipyard by the end of 2023, recycling the ship in Turkey is the last resort that Morgen hopes to avoid.” In terms of passenger capacity, both vessels would be the largest cruise ships in the world. Royal Caribbean Wonder of the Seas is the current title holder with a capacity of 6,988 passengers.
