KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 1 (Reuters) – A Malaysian court found Rosmah Mansor, wife of former prime minister Najib Razak, guilty on Thursday of seeking and accepting bribes in exchange for government contracts, days after her husband was jailed for corruption. Kuala Lumpur High Court Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan said the prosecution had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt. Before handing down the sentence, the judge asked Rosmah’s lawyers to present their case for mitigation. Rosmah, who faces jail time and a fine, addressed the judge in tears immediately after the verdict. The charges carry prison terms of up to 20 years and a fine of at least five times the amount of the bribe, although Rosmah could ask the Kuala Lumpur High Court to stay the sentence pending appeals in higher courts. Prosecutors say Rosmah demanded a bribe of 187.5 million ringgit ($41.80 million) and received 6.5 million ringgit from an employee of the company that won the project. Rosmah has claimed she was framed by her former aide as well as several government and corporate officials involved in the project. Najib and his wife, who have faced criticism for her lavish lifestyle, are at the center of a broad crackdown on corruption, which came after losing a historic 2018 election that ended Najib’s nine years in power. Last week, Najib began serving a 12-year prison sentence after Malaysia’s top court upheld his conviction in a case linked to a multibillion-dollar bribery scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). He remains on trial in four other corruption cases. read more ($1 = 4.4880 ringgit) Sign up now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.comSign up Report by Rozanna Latiff. additional reporting by Hasnoor Hussain and Ebrahim Harris; Editing: Simon Cameron-Moore Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
