The Columbus Police Department released body camera video Wednesday of the Tuesday morning incident. Police repeatedly knocked on the door of Lewis’ apartment in the Hilltop neighborhood. They repeatedly call for “Apartment H” to “come to the door”. After several minutes, a Black man, not Lewis, opens the door and raises his hands as instructed by the police. He goes out the back and is handcuffed and held. Another man, also not Lewis, leaves and is detained. With the door open, the police call Lewis out. A police dog comes in and runs around the apartment. The police warn Lewis that the dog will bite him if he doesn’t come out. The police enter the apartment and go to a bedroom next to the kitchen. A few minutes later, the police open the bedroom door and an officer Ricky Anderson immediately shoots Lewis. Police repeatedly call for Lewis to show his hands and “crawl out.” The police attempt to cuff a shirtless Lewis and tell him to stop resisting. The police are holding him by his hands and feet. Louis was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. No weapon was found in Lewis’ apartment. “Lewis appeared to be holding the vape pen before he was shot,” according to The Columbus Dispatch, citing Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant. The Lewis family’s attorney, Rex Elliott, blamed the police for Lewis’ death. “The dash cam footage released yesterday afternoon says it all,” he said in a statement Thursday to local television station WSYX. “In literally the blink of an eye, a Columbus police officer shot and killed Donovan Lewis, an unarmed young black man who was alone in his bed in the middle of the night. As a result of this completely reckless behavior by a Columbus police officer, a family is left to mourn the loss of such a young soul.” “Donovan Lewis has passed away. As a parent, you know, I sympathize and feel sorry for his mother,” Bryant said at a press conference. “I feel sorry for our community, but we will allow this investigation to take place.” Watch above via CNN and the Columbus Police Department.
