While the provincial government lifts a ban on scout fires in the Interior South on Friday, local governments in the Central Okanagan are taking a more cautious approach. The Regional District of Central Okanagan announced Thursday that it is maintaining its campfire ban until further notice. The ban affects all local government fire jurisdictions in the RDCO, including the City of West Kelowna, District of Lake Country, District of Peachland, Westbank First Nation and the Ellison, Joe Rich, North Westside and Wilson’s Landing fire districts. Campfires are prohibited year-round in the City of Kelowna. “The Central Okanagan continues to experience high temperatures, dry conditions and high to extreme fire danger,” RDCO said in a news release. RDCO’s fire ban is not in effect within provincial parks and lands outside a local fire protection area.
