When Alfie was first introduced to Walford in 2002, show bosses intended him to take a very different path to what ended up happening. Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at a recent EastEnders press conference, Shane recalled how producers originally wanted Alfie and Peggy Mitchell to become lovers. The plans fell by the wayside when the EastEnders team noticed that Shane had developed a strong working relationship with Jessie Wallace, who plays Kat Slater. BBC Shane explained: “20 years ago, the whole Kat and Alfie thing happened purely by accident. You know what had to happen? “When I came on 20 years ago, Tony Jordan was going to recreate the Bachelor story with Alfie and Peggy! Did anyone know about this? “I was Dustin Hoffman. I don’t think it would work!” He added: “But then off camera, me and Jessie were having a proper laugh and the writers saw that chemistry and purely that relationship happened by accident.” BBC Shane has hinted at this canceled storyline in the past, including on The Graham Norton Show in 2015. In 2017, he also tweeted a picture of himself with Dame Barbara Windsor and teased: “A story about the Easties in 2002 was discussed but never made it to screen, it would change everything but you don’t want to know!” Next week, EastEnders is showing a special flashback episode showing how Peggy Mitchell and her family were living in 1979. Jaime Winstone plays the role of Peggy in the one-off scenes, having previously played Dame Barbara in the 2017 BBC drama Babs. BBC Jaime recently paid tribute to Dame Barbara, who sadly passed away in 2020, for helping her prepare for the biopic a few years ago. He said: “I’ve played Barbara in the past and I became quite close to her. It was an amazing milestone for me in my career. I hadn’t got to the point where I was done with her and sadly she passed away and we all lost an amazing icon and owner for our nation , but also a very good friend. “When that came up, it suddenly came into my life: ‘Oh my God, EastEnders. What should I do with it? How do I do this? I have a background in film and TV, but EastEnders is an institution and we’ve all grown up with it.’ “I spoke to [EastEnders’ executive producer] Chris [Clenshaw] and he wanted to get the idea of how we’re going to do that: “What do you mean it’s a flashback episode? What is this?’ “I’ve played so many roles in Barbara’s life and the only role I hadn’t played was Peggy Mitchell, and it threw me off for a while. I just felt like this is something I had to do, it would put me off traveling with her.” Check out Digital Spy’s full coverage of the EastEnders autumn press event: – EastEnders confirms Dot Branning death story as soap pays tribute to June Brown – EastEnders breaks silence on Sid Owen’s return as Ricky Butcher – EastEnders casts Navin Chowdhry as newcomer Nish Panesar – New EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw shares a vision for the show’s future – EastEnders boss promises shock DI Keeble reveal in Mitchell flashback episode – EastEnders introduces a face from Sam Mitchell’s past – EastEnders boss teases the end of Mick and Janine’s story – EastEnders teases Mitchell flashback with new images and spoilers – EastEnders boss reveals Freddie Slater’s dramatic arrival as Bobby Brazier takes on role – EastEnders newcomer Bobby Brazier reveals emotional scenes about Freddie Slater – EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw explains why he’s bringing back Alfie Moon – EastEnders star Shane Richie promises big change to Alfie Moon in return – EastEnders star Shane Richie teases Alfie and Linda overturning comeback plot EastEnders airs Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm. on BBC One.
