Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the head of the country’s ruling party, said on Thursday that it was Poland’s “obligation” to seek compensation. Mr Kaczynski, who is chairman of the Law and Justice party, spoke after the publication of a report on the cost of the Nazi occupation to Poland. “Not only have we prepared the report, but we have also taken the decision on further steps,” he said. The report estimates that losses caused by the German occupation cost Poland 6.2 trillion zlotys (£1.3 trillion), up from the 2019 estimate of $850 million. Germany, which is Poland’s biggest trading partner, has said in the past that all financial claims related to the war have been settled. Mr Kaczynski’s party has repeatedly called for reparations since he took power in 2015, but Warsaw has never formally demanded reparations. “The position of the German government is unchanged: the issue of reparations is closed,” the German foreign ministry said. An estimated six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war, and Warsaw, the capital, was destroyed after an uprising in 1944 in which nearly 200,000 civilians were killed. In 1953, Poland’s then-communist leaders renounced any claim to reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to absolve East Germany, a Soviet satellite, of any responsibility.
