He was an auxiliary member of the RCMP in Alberta 39 years ago, but it wasn’t until 2022 that Gary Trudell received recognition here in Kelowna for his 10 years of service. It all happened because of a sword. Richmond RCMP Sgt. Sanjesh Lal collects RCMP memorabilia. Through a chance encounter on Facebook, he befriended Trudell, who is now 82 and lives in Kelowna. Trudell has had the Centennial Sword since 1973 when Sgt. Lal wanted to buy. “It is a commemorative sword that actually has the history of the force engraved on the sword. It’s a collector’s sword,” said Sgt. Lal. “I was looking for one and Gary seemed to have one so I approached him and that’s how we forged our friendship.” Through their conversations, it was revealed that Gary’s only regret was that when he retired from the Auxiliary program, he never received any kind of separation recognition from the force. Sgt. Lal contacted the Assistant Program Coordinator at K Division (Alberta) and on Thursday, at Kelowna RCMP headquarters, Supt. Kara Triance was honored to act on behalf of K Division by presenting a certificate of recognition and a basket of RCMP items to Trudell. Trudell volunteered 50 to 60 hours a week during his tenure as an auxiliary member of the RCMP. “I’m thrilled to have the recognition because I loved every part of it and would do it again if I was younger and could.” The previous RCMP Auxiliary program was terminated by RCMP National Headquarters in 2020 and so far the force and the British Columbia government have not been able to reach an agreement on a new program.
