The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has announced that it will adopt 9-8-8 as the number to call for Canadians in need of immediate mental health crisis and suicide prevention intervention. This means that 10-digit dialing will have to be introduced in Newfoundland and Labrador in order for 9-8-8 to work across Canada. This province is one of the few jurisdictions in Canada where seven-digit dialing is still the norm. The CRTC requires service providers to complete the transition to 10-digit dialing in Newfoundland and Labrador and other jurisdictions by May 31, 2023.
