Liz Truss will win the Tory leadership contest, but not by as wide a margin as expected, a Conservative pollster has said. Lord Hayward, a former MP, said the current foreign secretary would have to choose her cabinet from all sides of the Tory party if his prediction was correct. His comments came shortly after Tory MP Kevin Hollinrake, a Sunak ally, said Ms Truss’ victory was “not cut and dried”. After conducting a private poll of the 700 Tory members in his constituency, he claimed Mr Sunack had an 8-point lead over his rival. “I’ve seen some of the polls and the national polls. I think it’s very difficult for pollsters to identify who is Conservative and who isn’t because there’s no open database,” he said. His comments came hours before the end of the Tory leadership race, with voting closing at 5pm on Friday. Meanwhile, in a move branded “very strange” by critics, Boris Johnson will try to clear his name from Partygate by publishing government legal advice.

Labor accuses the government of a “gross misuse” of taxpayers’ money

The Labor Party has accused the government of misusing taxpayers’ money after spending £50,000 to take Whitehall officials on a sightseeing flight around Britain. The government plane was used on Wednesday to transport the team on a return journey from London to the Scottish Borders. Shadow attorney general Emily Thornberry said it was a “gross misuse” of public funds. “This kind of gross misuse of taxpayers’ money would be considered completely unacceptable at best, but amid the cost of living crisis facing our country, those responsible should feel absolute shame,” he told the PA. news agency.
