Oscar Piastri will drive for McLaren in 2023 after the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board ruled in their favor over current employers Alpine.
The verdict, which brings to an end an extraordinary transfer saga and contract battle, means Alpine has lost its top reserve driver and is still searching for a replacement for Fernando Alonso for next season.
Alpine were adamant they had a valid contract for Piastri to drive them in 2023, which he signed last November and even announced the Australian’s promotion in early August. But Piastri, who immediately denied the team’s confirmation, and his management believed he had a deal with McLaren as his Alps clause had expired.
The four-person Contract Recognition Board (CRB) met on Monday to begin a hearing on the dispute and on Friday revealed they had unanimously ruled in favor of McLaren and Piastri.
Sky Sports News understands that key parts of Alpine’s contract documents were not signed by Piastri, while the French club also failed to adequately prove expenses on his behalf after funding his youth career.
CRB said Piastri had signed a deal with McLaren on July 4 and was entitled to drive for the team in 2023 and 2024 – and McLaren immediately announced a multi-year deal for a new rookie driver to partner Lando Norris .

Former world champion Jenson Button believes Oscar Piastri should not have made enemies so early in his F1 career amid a contract dispute between Apline and McLaren.
“I am extremely excited to make my F1 debut with such a prestigious team as McLaren and I am very grateful for the opportunity that has been offered to me,” said Piastri.
“The team has a long tradition of giving opportunities to young talent and I look forward to working hard alongside Lando to push the team towards the front of the grid.”
Alpine said soon after that they now “consider the matter closed” and will announce their driver line-up in due course.
The French team, who currently lead McLaren in an F1 battle for fourth place, have their sights set on Pierre Gasly as Esteban Ocon’s next team-mate.
Gasly is under contract with AlphaTauri until 2023, but Red Bull are keen to release the Frenchman, who spent just half a season alongside Verstappen in 2019 before falling back to the sibling outfit.
Why did Alpine’s case fail? Explaining Piastri’s big hit
Sky Sports News’ Craig Slater “As to why Alpine failed here, I understand that key pieces of paper may not have been signed by Piastri. “They couldn’t even support the expenses they had incurred on his behalf. “The timing is exciting because McLaren signed Piastri on the 4th of July. Nine days later their current driver Daniel Ricciardo, who will not be next year, announced that he would be staying with the team. “Andreas Seidl said he kept Ricciardo in the loop, but this seems like a conflict in timing and timeline. “It’s hard for Alpine to get it. They would have invested almost £10 million in Piastri’s career. “I understand that now they will have to look very carefully at how they go about their contract work. One or two people connected to this team have noticed that Red Bull never make these mistakes when they have new drivers, there is no case another group can come and hunt them down because they are absolutely impervious to what they do. “They have announced that they are drawing a line under this and will not seek compensation even in the high court. “The only silver lining from Alpine’s point of view is I think during this process they may have identified that they can take Pierre Gasly from the AlphaTauri team. “He’s a race-winning driver, more experienced than Piastri and I think he’s been their preferred option for at least the last week and I expect him to make that move.”
McLaren delighted after landing rising star Piastri
McLaren were always confident of signing Piastri, having already agreed the repayment to end Daniel Ricciardo’s contract at the start of 2022.
They have now confirmed one of the hottest properties in motorsport, with Piastri following in the footsteps of Charles Leclerc and George Russell by winning the Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in back-to-back seasons.
“Oscar is one of the rising talents coming through the feeder line in F1 and we are delighted to see him join the team for 2023,” said McLaren CEO Zach Brown.
“To win both F3 and F2 in back-to-back rookie seasons is a real achievement and testament to his talent in single-seater racing. In Lando and Oscar we have a young, exciting F1 line-up with huge potential that stands us in good stead to succeed our future ambitions”.

Alpine team principal Ottmar Schaffnauer says he believes current reserve driver Oscar Piastri has signed with McLaren for next season.
Andreas Seidl added to Sky Sports F1: “There are two reasons why we wanted to have Oscar.
“I think he’s shown in the junior classes that he’s something very special and has a lot of potential. Also, personality-wise I think he’s a perfect fit for our team and that should be the main focus of the news.
“As far as the Contract Recognition Board is concerned, for us, this was never a case, so I guess it’s best to ask the other party involved why they thought they had a case.
“So this [decision] it’s really no surprise to us. It is important now to look to the future and at the same time focus on the last eight races of the season together with Daniel and Lando.”
The story of a remarkable transfer story

Piastri, however, insisted his future in the sport lies with another team and not the one that funded his title-laden junior career and his move to become an F1 reserve driver.
“I understand that, without my consent, Alpine F1 issued a press release late this afternoon that I will be driving for them next year,” Piastri posted on social media.
“This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not ride for Alpine next year.”

A contract battle was then underway between Alpine, who insisted throughout that they had the rights to their stock for next year following a contract signed last November, and McLaren and Piastri, whose camp was certain that an Alpine clause had expired and could move groups.
McLaren made their stance on Piastri clear when they terminated Daniel Ricciardo’s contract for 2022, well and truly opening the door for their next young driver to team up with Lando Norris.
