Members of the waste service and non-teaching training roles were due to walk out next week, but talks with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon have resulted in an offer that could end the strikes. The GMB and Unite have joined Unison in suspending strike action, saying they will submit a new pay offer to members they recommend it be accepted. Wendy Dunsmore, Unite’s chief negotiator for local government, said: “Following the latest round of intensive talks, a new credible offer has finally been put on the table by [local authorities body] Cosla. “Unite wants to acknowledge the direct involvement of the First Minister as a primary reason for the discovery. “The offer on the table is fully consolidated and as a result there will be more cash in the pot going forward for local government workers.” Under the revised offer, workers earning up to £20,500 will receive rises of £2,000 a year. There will also be a £1,925 rise for those earning between £20,500 and £39,000, as well as a 5% rise for those earning between £39,000 and £60,000. Johanna Baxter, Unison’s head of local government, described the offer as a “victory” for members after eight months of negotiations, while Keir Greenaway, GMB’s senior organizer in Scotland, said the offer “delivers a significant amount of pooled money ” for the lowest workers. The pay dispute has piled up piles of rubbish in Scotland’s city centers and the suspension comes after lengthy negotiations between Ms Sturgeon, Cosla and the unions at St Andrews House on Thursday night.
